Qualcomm buys up Wi-Fi Chipset Company

Qualcomm_E_20120719172206Qualcomm is addressing a need to improve the amount of Wi-Fi hotspots available. This number is expected to grow within the next year and Qualcomm wants to be prepared. They have made an agreement with Wilocity, an Israeli Wi-Fi chipset company, to do just that. There are many benefits for Qualcomm making this deal. It allows them to integrate Wilocity’s technology into its devices at a time when 4K video is becoming increasingly significant. The capacity to rapidly stream ultra-HD video to smartphones and tablets could help Qualcomm stand out from the competition. Wi-Fi has become especially important since it is a growing market. Qualcomm is aware that they need to stand-out and make significant moves or they will fall to the back of the pack. Global Wi-Fi hotspot deployments reached 4.2 million hotspots in 2013 and are expected to surpass 10.5 million by the year 2018. This is neither the first nor last transaction you will likely see Qualcomm making in regards to Wi-Fi. This deal for $300 million is hardly the largest deal either but it reinforces their desire to become a strong presence in the Wi-Fi market. Wilocity has developed chips that use 60 GHz band to deliver ultra-fast Wi-Fi and is a notable supporter of the 802.11ad standard. Atheros and Airgo Networks have been other Wi-Fi chipmakers that Qualcomm has purchased in the past. Launch 3 Telecom buys and sells equipment that utilizes cellular baseband.
