Argentina has some big plans ahead to address the need for 4G LTE service. They wish to auction high-speed wireless licenses toward the end of 2014 to entice mobile operators to investment in 4G networks. The demand for data has been soaring as the use of smartphones and tablets engulfs the country's existing data networks. This auction for spectrum proves that there is help on the way.
The frequencies that are up for bid in the upcoming auction are 700 MHz and 1.7-2.1 GHz. The winning bidders will have five years to complete deployment of their 4G networks. The government also has plans to auction remaining 3G spectrum blocks in the 1900 MHz and 850 MHz frequency bands.
The growth of phones and the data demands they require has not been matched by the spectrum that can support them. Argentina has globally been one of the highest rates of mobile phone ownership. According to the International Telecommunications Union, the South American country had almost 151 mobile phones for every 100 residents in 2012.
However, mounting demand for data-intensive services such as video streaming have overwhelmed the limited amount of radio spectrum available to phone companies. In addition, the quality of service has become worse due to gaps in data service, dropped calls or the outright loss of wireless coverage. This has become especially problematic in big cities like Buenos Aires, the capital city of Argentina. The country is anxious to see higher penetration of mobile broadband with 3G and 4G service.
