AT&T and DirecTV make Mega Deal

att-directv
AT&T has made an agreement that could impact the future of supplying and consuming television. The carrier has agreed to a deal worth $50 billion to acquire DirecTV, America's biggest satellite television provider. This deal would strengthen the AT&T’s pay-television business and permit more comprehensive bundling of services. Both sides have a lot to gain by making such an extravagant deal. This will improve AT&T’s capacity to provide video content across multiple platforms while DirecTV will increase their TV presence. These companies are doing successful already with a large amount of customers. DirecTV has over 20 million customers in the U.S. and 18 million in Latin America while AT&T has over 11 million subscribers for its U-verse broadband and pay-tv offer. As we have seen recently, these types of deals for video are becoming increasingly significant as Time Warner and Comcast made a similar pact. If the AT&T-DirecTV deal is approved, Comcast and AT&T would control more than half of the pay television market. Even Verizon and Netflix have made agreements to improve the user experience by leveraging Verizon’s fiber to the home (FTTH) network. "This is a unique opportunity that will redefine the video entertainment industry and create a company able to offer new bundles and deliver content to consumers across multiple screens -- mobile devices, TVs, laptops, cars and even airplanes," said AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson. The Latin America segment has revealed that there is room for improvement as only 40% of the region has been penetrated. Meanwhile at home, AT&T will commit to increasing broadband coverage for 15 million rural households. They would also like to keep offering a stand-alone broadband service providing at least six megabits per second speed as well as a stand-alone DirecTV service. The plan to experiment with different video distribution techniques is now possible with this new pact. These two companies joining forces creates growth opportunity that could impact the way people watch TV going forward. Launch 3 Telecom can provide equipment that assists in the quality of streaming television via DirecTV through Internet and phone service.
