Don’t look now Sprint, but you might have some serious competition for the acquisition of T-Mobile. Iliad, the 4th largest mobile company in France, has made an offer a bid in the area of $15 million to take control of the major U.S. Carrier. This opens up the possibility that Sprint could get involved in a bidding war with Iliad.
The strong $15 million bid would account for a purchase of 56.6% of T-Mobile. Iliad has been spreading their presence in the telecom industry with businesses set up in Israel, Monaco, and France. Xavier Niel, founder of Iliad, sees a purchase of T-Mobile as an opportunity to challenge competitors that have had a guaranteed stranglehold on the market. In addition, the benefit to Iliad would be a lower risk of being blocked by U.S. regulators. However, it has not been determined how Iliad would attain $10 billion in cost savings with no current presence in the U.S.
“T-Mobile has successfully established a disruptive position, which in many respects, is similar to the one Iliad has built in France.” according to a representative from Iliad.
Adding another bidder to the situation becomes a benefit to T-Mobile, even if they have no desire to do business with Iliad. To this point, a potential merger between T-Mobile and Sprint is being delayed again until at least September. This could add a new layer of negotiations between the two mobile carriers.
