Syracuse is in an area of upstate New York where land is vast and open. But the city of Syracuse itself is urban, busy, and packed with hospitals and a major university that accommodates around 20,000 students. This causes an extremely fast paced environment filled with businesses and people in need of fast technology to match their high-speed lives.
Verizon and Time Warner Cable are the two major service providers in the area. Something Syracuse lacks is a fiber-based broadband network, something they are seemingly in need of. Verizon is currently focused on getting the rest if their subscribers converted from copper to fiber networks. They are not yet ready to bring FiOS to Syracuse just yet. Verizon stated, "As far as FiOS expansion is concerned, Verizon is presently focusing its resources on meeting its franchise obligations to those municipalities where it currently provides cable television service and has no plans to expand FiOS in New York.”
Syracuse is becoming impatient and does not want to wait for Verizon’s services to get around to them. They have come up with a possible, yet far stretched solution. The mayor of Syracuse, Stephanie Miner, is considering the possibility of Syracuse building their own fiber-based broadband network. This would be a lot of work and require high funding, specifically drawn from tax payers. Verizon is an extremely reputable service provider, assisting providers worldwide, but they cannot back them up for the time being.
Launch 3 Telecom supports Verizon and their services throughout the U.S. and even globally. They are the leading service provider in the industry and Syracuse is just trying to get ahead in order to better satisfy local businesses and individual subscribers.
