Cell Towers Sprouting Up in Washington

pine-tree-cellular-tower-near-flagstaff-arizona-2010Cell Towers certainly don’t grow on trees but they may just pop up like one. Many people are anxiously awaiting the growth of a tree in Pasco, WA.  This is not just an ordinary tree, but an AT&T cell tower disguised as a pine tree.  These towers are common in most states throughout the country – including Washington – but the people of Pasco are unsure if they are ready for yet another new growth. An AT&T spokeswoman, Marianne Bichsel, has informed all involved that this “tree” will not interfere with radio signals within the area: “My understanding is that it meets all local and FCC requirements.” This cell tower will be used to provide service for two other cellular providers.  It has been designed to make a 14-foot-wide mounting arm located midway up the tower blend in with the surrounding area. However, there is still major discussion as to whether or not this cell tower should be built; all depending on if it will affect the signal from radio station KALE-AM.  Their managers have held a commission meeting to share why they oppose the building of the cell tower. KALE-AM’s consulting engineer, Bill Glenn, stated that the new tower may act as a reflector for the radio station’s signal, pushing it to the northeast, possibly causing it to no longer reach the nearby city of Richland at night.  He said if the new tower is positioned less than 600 feet from neighboring towers, interference should be minimal. The city of Pasco is now studying the potential interference, required by the FCC.  Citizens will soon find out if a new tree is growing in Pasco.
