Technology has become a crucial aspect to the construction of new stadiums. The NFL and San Francisco 49ers are ushering in the newest venue into the sports landscape with Levi Stadium. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, it is no surprise that this stadium would have high expectations as one of the most technologically advanced stadiums.
There was a lot of work performed to ensure the infrastructure was laid out properly and effectively. The amount of cabling laid out in the stadium could extend up to 400 miles. Of that cabling, 70 miles worth is allocated for 1,200 DAS antennas. In addition, there are also 1,700 high-tech beacons located around the venue. These access points and repeaters are discreetly located throughout the entire stadium so they are hidden under seats or under the overhangs. Each unit provides Internet to address a 100 seat region. Fans will be able to easily connect to Wi-Fi or 4G carrier service.
The 49ers are home to a wireless backbone that offers 40 gigabits per second of available bandwidth. These capabilities make for 40 times more Internet bandwidth capacity than any other U.S. stadium, and four times better than NFL stadium standards that have been set by the league.
Many manufacturers have gotten in on the action such as Sony, Intel, and Brocade. Sony has distributed 2,000 of their 4K technology TVs as well as LED video screens. Meanwhile, all the servers used to power the network are Intel processors. Brocade’s network technology is on full display as well. Other technological advances include fan apps that help them watch replays, order food, and guide them to their seat.
Of course, there were a few hiccups during the inaugural events to open the stadium. Some of the big issues were the wireless connection failing in the press box at one point and some customers having trouble using the phone app to buy parking passes. These are kinks that will likely be worked out as the season moves along but there are high expectations for Levi Stadium as the leader in venue technology capabilities.
