Sprint and T-Mobile Merger Officially Off

182260-tmobilesprintThe pursuit to merger 2 of the top 4 mobile carriers, Sprint and T-Mobile, has officially fallen apart. Sprint has decided to no longer pursue an acquisition of T-Mobile. Considering how long the merger has been discussed with no final agreement, it is slightly unsurprising that this occurred. In addition, a merger was expected to meet a lot of criticism from the FCC and Department of Justice. Although this would have brought these 2 carriers closer to the leader of the pack, many wanted to maintain a more diverse carrier competition of 4 major carriers. This marks the 2nd time in 3 years that 2 major carriers unsuccessfully made an effort to merger. This also comes off the heels of France’s Iliad making a bid to acquire T-Mobile. What was expected to be rejected could spark new life to the possibility of Iliad making the acquisition. T-Mobile has definitely shown that it is a hot commodity with many of its innovative offerings such as free unlimited music and termination fee pay. This generated over 900K monthly customers in the second quarter. Meanwhile, Sprint is experiencing some changes as Marcelo Claure of Brightstar will take over as CEO. As they prepare to move forward without T-Mobile, the goals of the carrier will be to turn its sights on acquiring new customers. He will be handed over a revitalized 3G CDMA as well as an emergent 4G LTE network. It is not out of the realm of possibility that these 2 carriers could re-enter conversations but for now, they are going back to being competitors.
