ECI Telecom, which stands for Electronics Corporation of Israel, is a manufacturer of telecommunication products focused on transport, carrier Ethernet, broadband access, and network management. With headquarters in Israel, ECI was originally founded in 1961 to produce advanced electronic equipment for the military. Telephone transmission products were also in circulation to manipulate signals carried on telephone lines. By 1976, ECI entered the civilian market and developed the telephone line doubler for conducting two conversations over the same phone line. The expansion of customer audience led to a name change in 1981 from Electronics Corporation of Israel to simple ECI Telecom. The following year, they also went public on Wall Street. The company has proceeded to receive awards and notoriety for their work with the Rothschild Prize for Outstanding Technical Achievement, MierComms’ “Networks as Advertised” Award, Best of Show Award at Internet Telephony Conference, 2008 Global Product Differentiation Innovation Award, 2009 cable TMCnet.com Product of the Year, and many other acknowledgements. ECI Telecom also sought to make innovative advances in the field by becoming the first to market products with SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) platforms. They would also become the first to market optical rings, MSPP (multiservice provisioning platforms), toll-quality VoIP, T::CORE, CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexer), and Hi-FOCuS-4. The company also saw advances in 10-degree reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer, Carrier Ethernet switch/routers made with a transport mindset, the first Gigabit Passive Optical Network, Dynamic Spectrum Management Level 3 and Network Design Platform. In recent years, ECI has also unveiled new product lines such as the 9000 series and Apollo series. Throughout the years, ECI also expanded their reach by acquiring Wavepacer, Eastern Communications Co. Inc., and Laurel Networks. The biggest corporate move came when ECI was acquired by Swarth Group which made them a private company yet again. ECI also has an assortment of holdings such as ECtel, Veraz Networks, InnoWave ECI Wireless Systems, and Celtro Communication. Currently, ECI has locations in over 20 different countries and 2,500 employees. They continue to thrive in the telecommunications industry as an innovator and visionary.
