It’s no secret that RadioShack’s business has fallen on hard times. However, Sprint is swooping in to make an attempt in reviving the electronic retail chain. As of April 2015, there will be 1,435 co-branded locations shared by Sprint and RadioShack.
Many have questioned why Sprint would want to associate themselves with a failing business. The logical answer is that Sprint will be expanding its footprint across the country with many new stores. Sprint was previously in dead last when it came to retail stores among top Tier 1 competitors. This one partnership resulted in nearly doubling their retail presence from 1,100 to over 2,000 stores.
“Our partnership with Sprint will bring immediate benefits to the millions of customers of both companies,” said RadioShack Chief Executive Ron Garriques. “Today’s opening of the co-branded stores is just one step in our plans to create new and exciting experiences across mobility, connectivity and innovation.”
Sprint will likely only consume about a third of each of these locations. This is not a problem for them since they don’t have a lot of products and services that would require a lot of space. Despite the space, the Sprint logo will be featured more prominently that RadioShack’s logo. Sprint will also need to use their own retail employees to sell phones and services.
The risk for Sprint is that RadioShack’s poor business performance will continue to decline. This is a chance they’re willing to take. There will be an infusion of rebranding throughout all of these stores that can hopefully improve the retail atmosphere.
