And They’re Off! Verizon prepares Churchill Downs for Kentucky Derby

5066-5068_The-Kentucky-Derby-MAINThe Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the most significant horse races of the year. Like other major sporting events, Churchill Downs will be prepped for the event with the help of Verizon. The carrier will upgrade the racetrack with small cells, Cell on Wheels (COWs), and Cell on Light Trucks (COLTs).
Every year has resulted in increased data demands. Additional capacity will be addressed around the track with nearly a dozen small cell units being added around the track. The beauty is that these units will go virtually unnoticed to those in attendance. DAS antenna upgrades will also be included as there will be 21 new units spread throughout the venue.
The Kentucky Derby is one of the quickest events in sports since it is only a 2 minute race. With such a concentrated time, many social media outlets are flooded with users. The ability for Verizon to add infrastructure and double their 4G LTE bandwidth will be appreciated.
“With the Derby coming up, the additional capacity we are deploying will ensure that fans can count on their Verizon mobile devices to share emails, texts, pictures and videos of this quintessential Kentucky experience,” said Lauren Love-Wright, Verizon Wireless regional president.
In addition, there will be many other innovative ways of getting better cellular service at the event. Cell on Wheels will be strategically placed throughout parking lots and other locations. These mobile cell sites consist of a cellular antenna tower and electronic radio transceiver equipment on a truck. Meanwhile, Cell on Light Trucks will also be placed although they have some limitations.
"150,000-plus people coming together and at the end of those two minutes, they want to share that moment with the world. These enhancements are making it happen. It's not only in the parking lots but it's also in the surrounding areas in the neighborhoods that see that traffic.” said Trevor Thomas of Verizon Wireless.
Those in attendance can expect a boost in service compared to last year. In 2014, Verizon customers used 1.37 Terabytes of data, which signified a 224% increase over the 2013 Kentucky Derby. A similar increase is a strong possibility this year but fortunately, they will be prepared for it.
