Laird in a New York State of Mind

2014-02-24 18.16.35Even one of the most famous buildings in New York City, the Empire State Building, needs some mobile upgrades every once in a while. Laird Antennas will be supplying their infrastructure to help improve cellphone reception through the entire Empire State Building. The upgrades are expected to have a significant impact on the upper portion of the building.
Laird was chosen to install their wireless network within the building so that every floor would be able to use their phones without a problem. Being one of the tallest buildings in the world can sometimes have its pitfalls. In the past, the height of the building has created cell phone reception disruptions to levels above the 25th floor. In such a high profile building, it is significant that all 102 stories of the building now meet the needs for higher data speeds and capacities.
Laird’s plan to address the building consists of multi-port functionality. This will allow for less antennas per floor as well as lower investment and installation costs. Essentially, Laird’s 2-port Low PIM, Low Profile MIMP Ceiling Mount antennas will perform double duty. These antennas have the ability to send and receive cellular and data signals at the same time from a single, low-profile design.
"We are very proud to have our products to help tenants in such a historic landmark. But you have to realize, the Empire State Building and structures like it present a challenging environment because it was not designed with today's technology in mind.” said Monty Rohde, Laird's Senior Vice President of Infrastructure Antenna Solutions.
This will certainly be a unique task for Laird to fulfill. The 83 year old building was constructed long before the first computer ever came into existence. The signal strength and coverage proximity becomes that much more important because of the way the building is laid out. There is a large abundance of steel, concrete, and walls throughout the entire building that creates obstacles.
ExteNet will also be assisting in bolstering connectivity in 3G and 4G through DAS. Together, Laird and ExteNet will modernize the Empire State Building with the appropriate wireless infrastructure for strong mobile performance.
