Cell Site Thieves Popping Up in the Northeast

There is a lot of expensive infrastructure used in making a cell tower operational. Where there is expensive equipment in plain sight, there are thieves who have the desire to steal it. The Northeast U.S. has been recently hit with a spree of attempted cell tower thefts.
From Rhode Island to New Jersey, police have been all over this illegal activity. Hasbrouck Heights, N.J. saw 2 males make an attempt to steal equipment in broad daylight. They were easily spotted behind a Staples and apprehended for burglary, attempted theft, possession of burglary tools, and criminal mischief. One has to think the reason for their strategy was to assume people would dismiss them as cell site workers.Car-with-cables-1
Another theft took place in Queens, N.Y. where a Sprint rooftop site was infiltrated and equipment was stolen. The stolen equipment was primarily copper grounding wires. Police are still on the lookout for the culprit and are continuing their investigation.
Finally, there were two men who were caught in the act of stealing equipment in North Kingstown, R.I. There were multiple instances that gave them away such as using a Ford Mustang to load the equipment. In addition, they were wearing shirts from Electronix Redux while saying they worked at Paramount Communications. Upon confirmation by Crown Castle, the culprits were arrested for felony larceny, conspiracy and multiple trespassing charges. Even though the two men didn’t escape the scene, their attempted heist will likely result in close to $30,000 in damages. Carriers who were affected by the incident include Verizon, T-Mobile, and Metro PCS.
These are only a few instances of attempted high-value cell site equipment thefts. Every year, millions of dollars in equipment are stolen or damaged from a cell site robbery. Police are trained to properly identify authentic cell site techs from burglars. Launch 3 makes sure that all cell site areas are securely protected and we use trusted technicians.
