AT&T announced its acquisition of Mexican Wireless’s company, Lusacell. This purchase has been agreed upon for $2.5 billion, debt included, and was made with Grupo Salinas. The contract has been signed, but nothing can officially happen until Mexican regulators approve this purchase.
So what will AT&T do with Lusacell? They plan on spreading their coverage farther in order to reach a wider customer range than before. Lusacell’s pre-existing subscriber network is made up of 8.6 million customers. Lusacell covered about 70% of Mexico’s wireless network.
Randall Stephenson, the chairman and CEO of AT&T, stated, “Lusacell gives us a unique opportunity to create the first-ever North American Mobile Service area covering over 400 million consumers and businesses in Mexico and the United States. It won’t matter which country you’re in or which country you’re calling – it will all be one network, one customer experience.”
Mexico grows and develops everyday, making it a smart market to invest in. AT&T can now bring their technology to Mexico and expand throughout their country, gaining more customers.
