The Internet of Things has gained a lot of momentum of the past year. The water service industry has generated an interest in creating smart water pipes. This would allow utility companies to become aware of leaks and other water issues before they become a bigger problem.
This piping problem is becoming a bigger issue for the country as 2.1 trillion gallons of water are being wasted because of 240,000 water main breaks per year. In order to address a problem of this magnitude, it would cost over $1 trillion to completely renovate the water system.
AT&T and IBM companies have been in talks with Muller Water Products to deliver a cost-effective solution to U.S. water problems. This Internet of Things technology will help workers locate a problem area and address the situation in a timely manner. The process will consist of installing current pipes with sensors designed to upload data via AT&T’s network to IBM servers. Trials have already been performed in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. The large amount of money invested will inevitably prevent a more massive amount of expenses in a large-scale water pipe repair.
“Cities are facing water shortages all over the world and need help identifying issues early to help avoid a catastrophic event. We’re giving communities more visibility into their water supply, and helping them better manage the future operation of their water systems.” said Mike Troiano, VP of AT&T Industrial IoT Solutions.
Together, AT&T and IBM have established themselves as a big player in IoT. AT&T has already connected over 22 million devices. Meanwhile, IBM has invested $3 billion into their IoT business. AT&T is building productive relationships with many major cities while IBM has been creating effective management software.
IoT continues to extend its footprint among many areas not commonly associated with wireless connectivity. AT&T will add water utilities to their many industries which include supply chain, insurance, industrial asset tracking, and smart cities. Adding water piping technology will further advance the quality of the world we live in through wireless.
