If last year’s Super Bowl was any indication, being technologically prepared is crucial to the overall success of major event like this. The University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona will be this year’s host venue for the Super Bowl where the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots will face off. With the many preparations for the big event, upgrading the wireless infrastructure throughout the stadium and parking lots is at the top of the list.
The big event requires capabilities that can deliver fast speeds and handle a large capacity. In 2008, Arizona hosted a Super Bowl where the stadium had Wi-Fi and Das already installed. The enormity of the Super Bowl showed that there was a lot more improvement that needed to be done.
This time around, the Arizona Cardinals have done a full rip and replace of the Wi-Fi system. This included the installation of new Cisco gear from back end to front in order to support a wireless game-day with the highest demand compared to any event. The total amount of Wi-Fi access points will now be a total of more than 750. They are discreetly hidden throughout the stadium with antennas in the handrails or panel antennas placed on the roof.
In addition, Integrator CDW has been in charge of improving Wi-Fi while Crown Castle has managed an overhaul of the DAS system through the addition of antennas to bolster coverage. The DAS units are places all throughout the stadium hidden on light poles and on the inner ceilings. The parking lots have also been addressed to receive DAS coverage. The major carriers like Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile will relish the opportunity to put their service capabilities on display with LTE broadcast technology and game-day apps. The price tag for theses wireless upgrade will end up totaling around $8 million.
“The last three or four years there have been things we knew we needed to improve [before the Super Bowl],”said Mark Feller, Vice President of Information Technology for the Arizona Cardinals. ““This year, we’re much better prepared.”
