Sprint Becomes Part of Kansas City’s Smart City Project

Kansas_City_MO_Skyline_14July2008vKansas City, Missouri is looking to make some major upgrades to the city’s wireless infrastructure. Sprint will be making a strong contribution to this new “Smart and Connected Communities” project by supplying free Wi-Fi network for downtown Kansas City.
Sprint is excited about its new role as the public Wi-Fi network of Kansas City. This venture will deliver free basic internet to tourists and residents of the neighborhood. Ultimately, the goal is to help Kansas City become more of a digitally inclusive city. The plans for the project will revolve mainly around the city’s 2.2 mile streetcar line.
In addition to Sprint, Cisco is expected to play a major role as well. Cisco is in the process of evaluating the city's needs for enhanced internet connectivity, better operational public infrastructure and new revenue streams. The project is expected to cost around $15 million to be divided among Kansas City ($3.8 million) and Cisco ($12 million). Fortunately, taxpayers will not have to be responsible for any of the funding.
In the past, many cities have not chosen to partner up with a carrier to deploy internet. However, Sprint will be breaking the mold as they will be very involved in the project. The relationship between Sprint and Kansas City makes sense because of how close their headquarters (Overland Park, KS.) is to the city.
