Nokia and Alcatel-Lucent Join the Race to 5G

5g handWe have seen 2G, 3G, 4G, and LTE connections flourish across the globe.  Obviously many countries are behind and trying to keep up with current technology, but others are ahead of the game.  They are demanding fast and more extensive network coverage that is coming with the making of the 5G networks.  Major companies like Nokia are looking to get in on 5G creations because they know that is where the money will be in the coming years.  Another bonus of the merger between Nokia and ALU is Alcatel-Lucent’s strong presence in the race for 5G technologies.
Nokia, just turning 150 years old, is looking to grow and expand their company.  In the past month, they acquired Alcatel-Lucent in order to grow, as well as help both companies charge forward with 5G development.  Nokia feels that together, they can beat out their international competitors in the race towards 5G coverage.
Nokia is being accused of merging with Alcatel-Lucent purely for their 5G patent stash.  The founder and principal at Constellation Research, Ray Wang, stated, “Alcatel-Lucent is sitting on some important patents in the 5G space and Nokia is doubling down on those technologies. This is really about an IP grab and a way back to leap-[frog] the markets.”
On the other hand, Jack Gold, principal at Jack Gold and Associates, stated “I’d suggest that perhaps patents are part of the equation, but the bigger issue is bulking up to compete head on with Huawei and also Ericsson.”  This seems like the more likely situation since Nokia has its own patents and needs to focus on growing in order to achieve 5G dominance.
The root of this madness is competition.  The race for 5G is getting closer every day and companies like Nokia and Alcatel-Lucent are trying to catch up to companies like Huawei and Ericsson.  By combining both Nokia and Alcatel-Lucent’s R&D they may stand a chance.  However, nothing can be sure because Huawei has stated they will release 5G information come 2018, which is way ahead of the estimated arrival time of the complete 5G technology.  You can expect the Nokia/ALU name to be linked to 5G for years to come.
