If you thought it was a tall task to support mobile devices at the Super Bowl, that was a cake-walk compared to the type of service demands the Olympics in Sochi have required. Not only is it important to support the over 120,000 users that are present, these devices are sending their data to many different countries around the world. Avaya was been selected as the official supplier of network equipment at this year’s Olympics.
Over an 18 month span, Avaya implemented a complete communications experience at 11 competition venues, three Olympic villages, media centers, celebration centers, data centers and technology operating centers. A lot of time, effort, and man-power is put in to achieve all this coverage. There are 2,500 wireless access points throughout the area. In addition, there are 21 shifts of operational staff and 19 expert support staff on hand to ensure that connectivity runs smoothly and any potential issues are addressed immediately. The advanced Avaya Fabric Connect technology has been built to recover within 20 milliseconds of a problem.
The amount of data used will be astonishing as it is estimated to be about 1-2 terabytes per day. Multicast capabilities on the Fabric Connect network are supporting 36 concurrent HD IPTV channels.
“Avaya’s technology powers simple, resilient, agile communications for small businesses up to the largest enterprises, making us the ideal network partner for the Sochi Olympic Winter Games.” said Pierre-Paul Allard, Senior VP of Avaya.
In an age of high wireless demand, every aspect of this event requires connectivity such as updating scores on ESPN, live video feeds of the Olympic events, and fans posting pictures to Instagram. There has been a lot of publicity about the poor conditions of hotel rooms for athletes and journalists but there have been virtually no complaints about the wireless capabilities.
This will be a historic Olympics with the amount of mobile devices being used. In general, this is a new issue that will need to be addressed at every Olympics going forward. There is a lot of preparation put into all aspects of these events to guarantee everything runs smoothly. Avaya can be commended for doing their part in handling the evolving demand in technology for the Olympics this year.
