The past year has already seen a lot of advancements for wireless internet services in various locations. By land, air, and sea, Launch 3 has talked about where you can stay connected. The newest setting to receive 4G LTE service is underground as 35 New York City subway stations have been equipped with LTE coverage.
Verizon and Transit Wireless are working together to cut down on the holes that exist in subway stations. The 35 stations now covered consist mainly in Manhattan’s West Side in locations such as Lincoln Center, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, and Columbus Circle. Transit Wireless has been cooperative as a neutral host of subway station wireless communication networks.
“The build-out of the Transit Wireless network continues to progress on schedule, as we add additional carriers” said William A. Bayne Jr., CEO of Transit Wireless.
Yet, this is just the first phase for Verizon. The next phase of installation is expected to see 40 more subway stations become LTE enabled. Penn Station and Grand Central are two of the major locations that will be addressed in the future.
In the fast pace of New York City, it is common for commuters to be on their phones. Often times, people have found themselves constantly searching for service in the subway, which not only cuts them off from communication and the Internet but drains the battery as well. This expansion will now help New Yorkers and visitors to remain in contact with others. In addition, this is a critical improvement to the safety of commuters in the event of an emergency so that they may call 911. Now when commuters are connecting on different trains, they can now be connected on their phones as well.
