Ericsson makes Mobile Service Shine

ericsson-philips-zero-site-street-lightingWith the need to meet more mobile data demand, manufacturers and carriers alike continue to come up with creative ways to integrate service into society without producing an eyesore. Ericsson and Philips have joined forces to unveil the newest mobile service infrastructure concealment solution at the 2014 Mobile World Congress. A streetlight project, referred to as ZeroSite, will transform what used to be a simple light source into a multipurpose broadband hotspot. On the mobile data side of the issue, operators like AT&T and mobile network infrastructure providers like Huawei will have ways to strengthen cellphone coverage. In 2013, we saw the average mobile phone user consume 1.2 gigabytes of data per month. The demand will only increase as this is nearly double compared to 2012. “City populations are increasing at the rate of 7,500 people per hour, but our world is not geographically expanding. Meanwhile, our ConsumerLab research shows that internet connectivity is one of the top five factors for satisfaction in city life. This Zero Site solution is the kind of innovation that offers a way for people to succeed in the Networked Society." said Hans Vestberg, Ericsson’s chief executive. Another added benefit is operators will have the ability to reach urban areas. In the past, it has been difficult receiving zoning approval in these areas due to the amount of space the base stations would occupy. Financial benefits to the new broadband streetlights are providing a new source of revenue from carriers that want to rent the streetlight space. In addition, the energy that would be saved from new LED-lights will save communities a decent amount of expense as well. Philips boasts that the LED lighting can provide energy savings of 50 to 70%. This newest advancement solves two problems at once: green lighting and meeting mobile data demands.
