FCC funds High Speed Internet for Schools and Libraries

1Education is always a concern to the government. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has been working on an “E-Rate” program that is meant to modernize schools and libraries. With the proper funding, 20 million students in at least 15,000 schools will have the ability to experience the wireless broadband internet. The FCC reinforced their dedication to ensuring more schools and libraries are connected to the internet by distributing $2 billion over the next two years to support broadband service. "In a country where we expect free Wi-Fi with our coffee, we should definitely demand it in our schools," said President Obama. The days of chalkboards are slowly disappearing. We are now entering a phase where laptops are used to administer tests and smart boards are the new substitute for chalkboards. The FCC is addressing the way the “E-Rate” program runs so that the funds are properly allocated to further technology. Previously, only half of the funds have been committed to broadband internet while other funds were contributed to outdated technology such as pagers, landlines, and dial-up connections. “During my tenure as chairman of the FCC, there will be no bigger or more significant issue than making sure our schools and libraries are connected to high-speed broadband networks,” said Tom Wheeler, FCC Chairman. The goal of the Obama administration is to ultimately connect 99 percent of all students to high-speed broadband within the next five years. The demand will be 5 times higher than that of an average home by demanding at least 100 megabits per second.
