CenturyLink and Alcatel-Lucent’s Common Core Goal

In recent months and throughout the past year, Alcatel-Lucent has made various agreements with top companies and carriers for its services and equipment.  The next company to utilize ALU’s advanced technology is CenturyLink.  They are currently one of the leading providers of Internet, TV, and Voice and have decided that in order to further develop and upgrade their network, they need to deploy Alcatel-Lucent’s 7950 core router. 

This core router platform provides efficiency that isn’t available anywhere else with the highest densities around.  It reaches up to 80 100GE and/or 800 10GE ports in a single 19-inch rack.  This capacity can be doubled with in a dual-chassis, back-to-back system configuration.  This product gets rid of the complexity associated with most platforms and allows for simple management. 

CenturyLink chose Alcatel-Lucent’s router because of their previous experience using their products.  James Feger, Vice President of CenturyLink’s network strategy and development stated, "We do have a lot of lot of Alcatel-Lucent 7750 products throughout the network along with our other vendors, but we have a lot of operational experience with the IP platform."  CenturyLink is very pleased with the Alcatel platforms and other equipment they have used in the past, leading them to choose Alcatel-Lucent again this time around.

 With this deployment, CenturyLink is providing a new common network core.  This means that they will have a common managed IP/MPLS network that will help to increase capacity, allow for any bandwidth upgrades, and further development and expansion of CenturyLink’s global data center network.  This faster network will better satisfy all of CenturyLink’s subscribers as well as continue to help their business grow worldwide.
