Verizon Under Fire for Raising Prices as Copper Line Fades Away

VERIZON FIBERVerizon has come under fire recently for its lack of management on copper wire landlines, particularly those that run in the New York City market. Verizon has been making the switch to a fiber optic broadband network. However, this could pose a possible risk to consumers who have not been switched over to the new network. This new risk posed to consumers has even been taken up by the New York State Legislature. The legislature in conjunction with local mayors and consumer advocates, has recently sent a petition to the New York Public Service Commission (PSC). The opening statement of the petition reads: "Telecommunications providers tout the reliability of fiber optic networks and the marketplace is full of claims for the desirability of wireless services but millions of New Yorkers continue to rely on a network that runs on copper for voice and data services." The main argument that the petitioners make against the mobile carrier is that prices have gone up, while the overall maintenance has gone down, which is required for the copper wire. Verizon however admittedly denied these allegations, stating that their main lack of timing was due to Super storm Sandy. Overall, the copper wire network will have to be replaced over time, but the fact still remains that the mobile giant has been slow to achieve this goal. Only time will tell if more problems with pricing and overall service quality will continue. Launch 3 Telecom is a global distributor of wireless and wireline equipment.
