T-Mobile may be facing some scrutiny involving fraudulent charges to subscribers that were purposely committed by the carrier. The hidden fees would be charged for third party texting services and resulted in a $10 additional charge. This practice is referred to as cramming. Customers were not even given the option of signing up for this service in the first place.
This issue, which occurred between 2009 and the end of 2013, has now been called into light as the FCC is suing the mobile carrier. The focus of the lawsuit is to prevent further cramming as well as providing refunds to those affected by this scandal.
Undoubtedly, T-Mobile will be facing a lot of backlash from this situation. Firstly, T-Mobile has been progressing towards a merger with Sprint. It is uncertain how this situation will play a role in the completion of the merger process. Additionally, this will hurt the reputation of T-Mobile after they have spent the last year promoting themselves as an “Uncarrier”. This marketing plan now makes them look like hypocrites as they can no longer be taken seriously as a carrier that helps customers avoid annoying fees. It is hard to believe that T-Mobile was unaware of the situation as nearly 40% of those hit with the fraudulent charge demanded a refund.
Meanwhile, T-Mobile has responded to the allegations by claiming that the issue has already been addressed. They stated that a program was established to offer refunds to those affected. In addition, the blame for this situation was deemed as “unfounded and without merit” according the CEO John Legere. He felt that the blame should not be laid on T-Mobile but rather the text subscription services.
It will be fascinating to see how this whole scenario plays out for T-Mobile and how their customer base responds. With a lot of moving parts, T-Mobile is facing a pivotal time for the future of the company. This is not the kind of situation that they want to be facing during a time of transition.
