It’s hard to believe that people used to go to a booth on the street to make a call. The growth of cell phones has effectively made these stations obsolete. The few pay phones around the city that still existed have been used for graffiti, vandalism and advertisements. Just recently, the city of New York found a way to make use of the pay phones throughout the city. The plan is to turn the pay phone into free Wi-Fi hot spots. The installment of Wi-Fi spots into these locations will remove all the dull and destroyed payphones.
As the cellphone has gained more widespread use, the pay phones have served no purpose. However, NYC Mayor, Mayor Bill de Blasio, decided to revamp these useless phones and allow New York City to become the largest free Wi-Fi network in the country. New York has already found innovative ways of spreading Wi-Fi through the subway systems.
Presently, phone companies have a set limit of cellular data for users to use monthly. This can be problematic for customers who are always using internet access for web browsing or apps. With the new Wi-Fi setup at each pay phone booth in the city, it eliminates much of the cellular data concerns. New Yorkers and tourist’s minds can be put at ease about going over the data amount and paying any potential additional fees.
