General Motors Driving the Expansion of 4G LTE

GM-OnStar-003-mediumThe days of cell service being non-existent while road tripping or camping are potentially upon us. In the past, Launch 3 has highlighted unique evolutions for LTE service such as underwater. Once again, LTE service appears to be driving forward with the announcement of General Motors installing 4G LTE systems into their Chevrolet cars. This high speed vehicle, in more ways than one, will essentially create a mobile Internet hotspot for convenient and faster service wherever the driver goes.
As the entrepreneur of OnStar, GM is expected to expand the proficiencies of LTE through the OnStar service. Previously GM cars have been connected to Verizon’s 2G CDMA networks. The move to LTE also translates into a change in carrier partners as AT&T will take over. This change will create much faster cell service speeds in cars as well as an opportunity for GM and AT&T to sell a much wider selection of mobile data services beyond tracking and roadside assistance. “This technology is not just for the rich and famous,” said Executive VP of Chevrolet Alan Batey. “You’re going to be connected everywhere.”
The specific car models that will be utilizing the in-built 4G LTE are the Impala, Corvette Stingray, Equinox, Malibu, Spark, Spark RV, Silverado, Silverado HD, Volt and Orlando. These vehicles will be made to accommodate multiple devices simultaneously such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets. In addition, AT&T customers will have the ability to add the in-car service to their mobile share plan.
While General Motors will be ushering in 4G LTE service, they will also have a Chevrolet App Store for customizing Internet experience in their vehicles. However, the issue of safety is the foremost concern with App usage. According to Batey, "We want customers to get the apps quickly but also to be able to focus on the road. If we cannot introduce the app safely, we won't introduce it at all".
The initial launch of 4G LTE will take place during the summer of 2014 in 10 vehicle models. The number of vehicles is expected to expand by 2015. In a competitive wireless market, it can be expected that this will play a role in the decisions car consumers make when purchasing a car going forward.
