Verizon and the Super Bowl seeing Green with E-Recycling

(Jim Sulley/newscast)The Super Bowl has grown into more than merely a football championship. It has become a cultural celebration with a multitude of events happening in and around the host stadium. In conjunction with the Super Bowl Host Committee and the Broadway Green Alliance, Verizon has been running e-waste events to collect and recycle electronic waste.

This year’s Super Bowl game may be in MetLife Stadium with the Denver Broncos playing the Seattle Seahawks, however, the Tri-State area has used this opportunity to host events of their own to help the community. The goal of the E-waste events was to make the Super Bowl greener while making a positive environmental impact on the New York and New Jersey area. The two locations of the events took place in Fair Lawn, NJ and Duffy Square in NYC.

Much less energy is used for recycling e-waste uses than is needed to mine new metals. It is also environmentally friendly in reducing the production of CO2 and sulfur dioxide emissions. The amount of e-waste collected was more than 2.4 million tons in 2010 and 3.4 million tons in 2011.  Awareness of e-recycling has increased with 19.6 percent of total e-waste being recycled in 2010 compared to 24.6 percent in 2011.

Since the inception of the program in 2009, Verizon has collected over 1.5 million pounds of e-waste. There are many economic and environmental benefits to collecting defective and end-of-life electronics whether it is to refurbish the parts or scrap it to create new parts.  Printed circuit boards are considered the “richest ore stream you’re ever going to find.”

An average football fan doesn’t naturally associate football with recycling electronics. However, cell service and Wi-Fi have become just as important to a football game experience. As electronics continue to intertwine with football, the attractiveness of participating in e-recycling could see its popularity grow in the future as well.
