French Consumer Group, UFC Que Choisir, plays Big Brother for Orange, SFR

Many times companies will claim to have the best service available. Most people will dismiss the claim if it sounds too good to be true. However, UFC Que Choisir, a French Consumer Group that defends the right of consumers in lawsuits against companies, has decided to take the initiative to challenge 4G LTE companies and their performance claims.


The validity of Orange and SFR has been put into question after research was conducted to compare test results versus the claims the company makes. There was a confirmation of a discrepancy between the LTE coverage that Orange France and SFR claim to have and the access consumers really get. The tests revealed Orange provided only 79.4% coverage while SFR provided only 75%. This is a concern for companies using their equipment as numerous operators have put their faith in new, faster data service using 4G to improve revenue.

Naturally, there was great concern and confusion about the allegations from the sides of Orange and SFR. Especially Orange refuted the claim that they weren’t meeting their requirements. They remained firm in their stance that they offer the maximum speed on its network.

The only ringing endorsement provided by UFC Que Choisir was for rival Bouygues Telecom confirming that they provide coverage up to 99.4%. The reason for the difference in recorded coverage could be attributed to a new "digital divide" occurring for LTE speeds. The increase of people living in more rural communities will result in a decrease of getting promised maximum speeds of up to 150 Mbps.

The proficiencies of the equipment by Orange and SFR are capable of performing up to their full capabilities. However, it is helpful to have watchdog regulators keeping tabs on companies so that customers receive the type of coverage and speed that they pay for.
