Launch 3 Museum Feature: Trimline Telephone

Launch 3 is continuing our commitment to beginning a telephone museum within the next few years consisting of vintage and historical phones. Yet another historical telephone Launch 3 is looking to add to our museum is referred to as a “Trimline telephone”.  This type of phone was widely used during the second half of the 20^th century. It was officially introduced in 1965 as one of the first phones to feature the dial numbers on the handset rather than the base. This was a revolutionary approach as this layout is commonly used today on cordless phones and cell phones. The original version in 1965 only featured a rotary dial but by 1966, touch tone numbers were available. Rotary dials would be discontinued by 1985. AT&T was the carrier to begin selling these phones and they quickly became commonplace for households in the 1970s and 1980s. The design of this phone was much more compact and portable than previous phone models. In addition, when the phone was removed from its base, the numbers would light up. Many alterations were made throughout the year such as switching between rubber and plastic dial keys. The ringer type was altered from a real bell to an electronic chirp ringer. Volume Control and rubber covers for the ear/mouth piece were also added over time as well.
