Thomas Edison once said “Show me a thoroughly satisfied man and I will show a failure.” Although the relatively new 4G LTE has become the standard in cellular service, there are many people looking to improve upon it. Among those looking to evolve cell service, South Korea has shown a strong commitment by investing $1.7 billion toward the future of 5G.
Within 6 years, the country hopes to provide a 5G network that would allow full-length films to be downloaded in a matter of seconds. Users would see changes in download speeds for an 800-megabyte movie from 40 seconds to 1 second with new 5G technology. Many of the revolutionized features for the new network would include ultra-HD, hologram transmission, and cutting-edge social networking services.
The benefits of a new 5G network would have a trickle-down effect on the entire telecom industry. From 2020 to 2026, 5G-related devices and infrastructure equipment could likely be sold for $350 billion in total sales. This would present a big boom for the telecom infrastructure equipment industry which has struggled of late in comparison to the mobile device industry.
"Countries in Europe, China and the US are making aggressive efforts to develop 5G technology ... and we believe there will be fierce competition in this market in a few years," said the South Korea science ministry.
There has consistently been a growing Asian interest and presence in 5G cell service. They have consistently produced better broadband speeds than the United States, Australia, and Europe. The implementation of 5G would only further cement their place among the cell service industry.
Samsung has become one of the leaders in the mobile device market. They plan on being the first companies to establish devices with 5G compatibility. Samsung has already successfully performed tests on 5G technology by managing data transmission of more than 1 gigabit per second over a distance of 2 kilometers.
By developing the 5G network, it is promising that the telecom industry knows it is not satisfied and is striving for more. Even if it takes 6 more years to be rolled out according to Huawei, the lack of complacency is promising for better and faster cell service capabilities in the near future.
