Manufacturer of the Month: Tellabs

Each month, Launch 3 Telecom will spotlight one of our many manufacturers.
March’s manufacturer is: Tellabs
For almost 40 years, Tellabs has been a leader in designing, developing, manufacturing, and servicing telecommunications equipment. They have done business with a variety of companies in the area of service providers, independent operating companies, multiple-system operator cable companies, enterprises and government agencies. From its beginnings back in Illinois to becoming an internationally successful company, Tellabs has generated sales at over $3.4 billion and continue to produce top of the line equipment. In 1975, Michael Birck and his 5 partners started Tellabs over a cup of coffee with plans to create a company that would go beyond conventional corporate standards. The company goal would be to offer customers products and services for specific needs. After incorporating, their first venture was marketing their inaugural product which was an echo suppressor made for independent telephone companies to eliminate reverberations during calls. Subsequent years would see expansion into Canada and Puerto Rico as well as the south with a Texas manufacturing facility. The growing company success led to the development of complex networking systems and digital communications systems for telephone companies and large computer systems. However, the formation of the Baby Bells in 1984 brought Tellabs down to earth as the competition became more challenging. Although faced with a daunting task, this reformation ultimately benefitted Tellabs. They were able to reclaim their niche with the explosion of phone network demand and the advent of the internet. Their global penetration also expanded out to London, Ireland, Belgium, New Zealand, Korea, and Mexico, Australia, and Hong Kong. By 1990, Tellabs had grown to 2,000 employees at 25 locations globally and sales of $211 million. One of their major breakthroughs were releasing the SONET-based Titan 5500 and Titan 6500 digital cross-connect system. In 2000, Michael Birck stepped down as CEO and became chairman of the board of directors. Meanwhile, Richard Notebart stepped into the role and oversaw more years of rising success. Its run of success has seen a range of products in mobile backhaul, access products for phone and internet, and optical products for adding bandwidth. Today, some of the big moves that Tellabs has made are joining forces with Coriant to expand their portfolio of products. This company can boast that over one third of the world's wireless calls are made through networks owned by Tellabs consumers. Launch 3 Telecom can provide equipment made by Tellabs.
