Over the past few weeks, there have been rumblings that Facebook may be interested in starting their own wireless network. It was confirmed at the Mobile World Congress trade show that these rumors are not true.
The goal for Facebook is to partner up with operators rather than venture into creating one of their own. Since 2010, Facebook has been “zero-rated” among 150 wireless operators which means the usage of the social network does not count toward customer data usage. Facebook’s remains confident keeping their expertise in a domain their familiar with.
"Operators are the best at planning, deploying and operating their networks," Chris Weasler, Facebook's head of global connectivity said. "And that is not something we have a core competency in. And so partnering is the right approach for us."
Facebook has a different course of action in mind which starts with the promotion of Internet.org. The program is designed to encourage wireless carriers in developing markets to propose a free tier of Internet service in order to convince wireless subscribers to pay for supplementary Internet access. The free tiers would be text-based such as messaging, weather, food prices, search and course, social networking. Internet.org would not request carriers zero-rate data-intensive services like video streaming. The big markets that this program would aim for would be in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.
Facebook is aware that they will need help from manufacturers who already know a great deal about the industry. There is a strong showing among the members of Internet.org such as Ericsson, MediaTek, Nokia, Opera Software, Qualcomm, and Samsung Electronics. By enabling people to discover the internet, it seems only natural that they will discover Facebook. In the end, this is what Facebook sees as a win in their book.
