Not too long ago, landlines were the only method for using a telephone. With the explosion of cellular and wireless devices, the end of landlines seems almost inevitable. Homes with landlines were at 96% in 1998 and have quickly plunged since then. Fact is, Wireline is out and Wireless is in.
Even more interesting is the correlation between wireless-only homes with income, age, and ethnicity. 55% of people who have an income below the poverty line only own mobile phones. That is an increase of 2.9% from 2012.
The shift from wireline to wireless has had diverse paces among different age demographics. The majority of Americans under age 35 are cell phone-only, yet only 12.6% of Americans 65+ are only cell users.
It makes sense that this would be how the figures break down as older generations tend to stick with what they are comfortable with. Meanwhile, the younger generation has been fed smartphones to meet their every need, making the purpose of having a landline pointless.
The fact that there are more effective and convenient alternatives, like VoIP, casts a dire forecast on the future of landlines. Many providers have put a lot of emphasis on the importance of wireless. As the amount of users fall, landlines may become as much a relic as a record player or VHS. When you look at the numbers, it’s certainly heading that way.
